About this activity
First year on your own: at the kitchen table on payday, carry your net pay from the pay stub to a monthly budget, give every dollar a line until it balances, cover a surprise expense, and catch a receipt that charged the wrong HST. Three months, each harder.
What students learn
- C2.3: read a pay stub (gross pay, CPP, EI and income tax deductions, net pay) and budget from net pay
- C2.3: set the lines of a monthly budget from real considerations (rent share, phone plus HST, the cheaper transit option after pricing both ways, groceries) until income equals spending plus savings
- C2.1: pay yourself first with a savings line, follow the budget when a surprise expense arrives, and check a receipt's HST (13% in Ontario; basic groceries are zero-rated)
