About this activity
A striped gas balloon rises beside a sea cliff. Students split the row of sandbags into groups with dividers, mark the bags to cut loose and pull Release: the balloon rises exactly (bags dropped / all bags) of the cliff, so it lands on the ledge only when the fraction of the set matches the ledge's fraction.
What students learn
- Multiply a whole number by a proper fraction (2/3 x 15) by splitting a set into equal groups and taking some of the groups (B2.9)
- Connect a fraction of a set to the same fraction of a height on a vertical number line
- Find how many more of a set make a higher fraction, counting what is already gone
