About this activity
In a moonlit pumpkin patch, students measure pumpkins with acorns, then walnuts, then a centimetre ruler lined up at 0, and drag each pumpkin to the neighbour whose order it fits.
What students learn
- E2.1: measure a length by laying non-standard units (acorns, walnuts) end to end with no gaps or overlaps
- E2.1: explain that a bigger unit needs fewer units, so two measures only compare when they use the same unit
- E2.3: line up 0 on a centimetre ruler with the edge and read where the object ends, seeing what a start at 2 does to the reading
- E2.2: use 100 cm = 1 metre to fill a 1 metre step exactly
