About this activity
Two teams take turns on the projector claiming plots in a night market park. A team drags out a rectangle of lantern spots, splits it into facts it knows, and sets each part's lantern count; exactly that many lanterns light.
What students learn
- B2.2: recall and demonstrate multiplication facts to 10 × 10 by lighting every part of an array (rows × columns)
- B2.1: use the distributive property to build a fact you do not know from facts you do (7 × 8 as 7 × 5 and 7 × 3) and to find and check a whole product
- Misconception exposed: a fact you do not know cannot be built from facts you do; a guessed count for a whole plot leaves a dark strip or sends spare lanterns away, while a split lights it
