About this activity
A live class rally over red-rock canyons. On their phones students bridge each gap by laying fraction planks end to end, or by pressing one plank for a deep gorge, and their buggy crosses, drops or jams on the big screen.
What students learn
- Add fractions with like and unlike denominators by renaming them as same-size pieces (B2.5)
- Subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including finding the missing part of a length (B2.5)
- Build and read mixed numbers between 1 and 2 on a fraction bar
- See why adding the tops and adding the bottoms (1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5) makes a length that is too short
