About this activity
A 3D river canyon where students build bridge piers from coloured fraction blocks (a whole block is one storey; halves to twelfths are slices of it). They pick a block size, dial how many, the crane stacks them, then they lower the road: level piers let the truck cross, a short pier tips the deck, a tall one cracks it, and a ramp built out of order dips.
What students learn
- Represent equivalent fractions from halves to twelfths by building the same height from different block sizes (B1.3)
- Represent improper fractions and mixed numbers as stacked heights past one storey, with or without whole blocks (B1.3)
- Compare and order fractions with unlike denominators, including improper fractions and mixed numbers, by building a ramp that rises from lowest to highest (B1.4)
- See that a fraction with bigger numbers is not always a bigger amount (4/8 = 1/2, 5/8 < 3/4)
