About this activity
Inspect a river bridge as the town's bridge inspector: tag each member as pulled (tension) or pushed (compression), drive a loaded truck across to check every tag with stress colours, then design bridges that carry heavier trucks safely with the least material.
What students learn
- D2.3: identify the direction of the internal forces in a loaded structure (tension or compression) and how the point where the load sits changes them
- D2.5: describe how a load past a member's rating makes the structure fail, and which member gives way first
- D2.6: choose a material and a form from strength, weight and availability so a bridge carries its load safely
