About this activity
Restore a sunlit palace courtyard. Each floor is drawn to scale on a square grid: the student cuts it into four parts, orders exactly the tiles each part needs, then adds the parts to load the tile cart. A forgotten part stays bare floor.
What students learn
- Multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number with the area model: split each side, find all four partial products and add them (B2.6)
- Connect the four parts of the area model to the lines of the column algorithm (B2.6)
- Use the distributive property: a side split any way gives the same total (B2.1)
