About this activity
A 3D physics lab in a treehouse kitchen. Students cut honey bars and berry pies with free knife strokes, deal piles of acorns and cut the leftovers, then press Serve: the pieces drop into the baskets of a big hanging mobile that swings toward any bigger share. When every share is equal the mobile hangs level and each share is named as a fraction or mixed number. Later, newcomers are balanced with equivalent pieces.
What students learn
- B1.6: solve fair-share problems by cutting bars and pies into equal parts and sharing up to 20 acorns among 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10 critters, with whole-number, fraction and mixed-number shares
- B1.6: see that pieces only count as halves, thirds or fourths when they are the same size (the misconception: any 2 pieces are halves)
- B1.7: build a share equal to 1 half, 3 fourths, 2 thirds or 2 fifths from fourths, eighths, sixths or tenths (equivalent fractions)
