About this activity
A card battler in Alberta's aspen parkland. Every card is a real organism, and a play is legal only when energy flows the right way: from a producer that caught the Sun's energy up to the animals that eat it. Decomposers recycle the leaf litter into soil nutrients.
What students learn
- Build food chains that start with a producer and pass energy from the eaten to the eater
- Use evidence about what each organism eats to decide who eats whom in an Alberta aspen parkland
- Explain how decomposers return nutrients to the soil so new plants can grow
- Join chains into a food web, including animals that eat both plants and animals
