About this activity

Walk the grounds of a friendly haunted house at night and break each room's giggly spell by pouring exact fractions of a cup into its cauldron, discovering that 2/4, 1/2 and 4/8 are the same amount.

What students learn

  • B1.4: represent fractions from eighths to halves as amounts of one cup, and explain what the top and bottom numbers mean
  • B1.4: discover that equivalent fractions (2/4, 1/2, 4/8) fill the same line on a gauge, and use them when a bottle is missing
  • B1.5: represent and compare fair shares of one cup among 2, 4 and 8 ghosts
